How To Remove Black Mould Safely (And Stop It Coming Back)
Black mould spreading across your walls isn’t just unsightly — it’s a health hazard. In November 2017, just two months after leaving 16 years working across manufacturing, distribution, and waste disposal industries, I suffered a spontaneous pneumothorax — a collapsed lung. The cause was never established, but the timing left an impression I haven’t forgotten. I take mould seriously on every survey.
As an independent damp surveyor covering Derby, Nottingham, and Leicester, I see dangerous mould problems weekly. The good news? Most mould is preventable. The bad news? Cleaning it away without addressing the cause means it’ll be back within weeks.
What Is Black Mould?
Black mould is a general term for dark-coloured mould species — most notoriously Stachybotrys chartarum — that grow in damp, poorly ventilated conditions. It appears as dark spots or patches, typically black or dark green, slimy when wet, with a musty earthy smell, and spreads rapidly in the right conditions. Mould needs three things: moisture, organic material (wood, plaster, wallpaper, fabric), and poor ventilation. Remove any one and mould can’t establish.
Health Risks of Black Mould
Exposure causes respiratory problems (asthma, bronchitis), allergic reactions, skin and eye irritation, headaches, fatigue, and in severe cases serious lung infections. Children, elderly people, and those with existing respiratory conditions are most vulnerable. If health problems are occurring, get medical advice immediately.
Common Causes of Black Mould
Condensation (most common): warm moist air from cooking, showering, or sleeping meets cold surfaces. Poor heating and inadequate ventilation make it worse.
Penetrating damp: water entering through damaged roof or guttering, cracked walls or render, failed windows or doors.
Rising damp: ground moisture rising through walls — genuinely rare, but serious when it occurs.
Plumbing leaks: hidden leaks behind walls or under floors create persistent damp ideal for mould growth.
How To Remove Black Mould Safely
Protection required: N95 or FFP2 face mask, rubber gloves, eye protection. Open windows. Never use a vacuum cleaner or dry brush — both spread spores. Don’t mix cleaning products.
For small areas (under 1m²): apply 1 part bleach to 4 parts water, specialist mould remover, or white vinegar using a cloth (not a spray); wipe thoroughly; dry completely; seal and dispose of cloths immediately.
For large areas (over 1m²): consider professional mould remediation. Extensive mould indicates serious underlying problems requiring expert assessment.
Common mistakes: painting over mould without killing it first (grows straight through); not wearing protection; using bleach on porous surfaces (doesn’t penetrate); not addressing the moisture cause (guarantees return).
Preventing Black Mould: The Permanent Solution
Control moisture sources: use extractor fans when cooking and bathing; open windows daily; wipe down surfaces after showering; fix leaking taps and seals; don’t dry clothes on radiators without ventilation.
Improve ventilation: trickle vents in window frames, extractor fans in bathrooms and kitchens, positive input ventilation (PIV) for persistent problems.
Adequate heating: maintain minimum 15–18°C throughout; heat rooms consistently; insulate cold walls where possible.
Fix underlying damp: repair external defects, improve drainage, address roof and gutter problems, fix plumbing leaks.
Anti-mould paint: use after addressing the cause and allowing surfaces to dry — useful in bathrooms and other high-humidity rooms, but not a substitute for fixing moisture sources.
Get Professional Assessment
