Winter Damp and Condensation: Why It Gets Worse (And How To Stop It)

Every winter, the same pattern: condensation on windows, black mould appearing, damp patches spreading, musty smells. You thought you’d sorted it last year, but here it is again. As an independent damp surveyor covering Derby, Nottingham, and Leicester, my phone rings constantly from October to March with condensation problems. The cold months bring unique challenges — but also unique opportunities to fix problems permanently.

Why Winter Makes Damp Worse

Cold external surfaces mean warm indoor air deposits moisture more readily. Windows closed for warmth reduce ventilation. More cooking, more people indoors, clothes dried inside — all increase moisture load. And heating creates temperature differentials that accelerate condensation formation on cold surfaces.

Condensation vs Structural Damp in Winter

Condensation is worse in winter but improves with ventilation, appears on cold surfaces (windows first), and responds to heating changes. Structural damp (penetrating or rising) may worsen in wet weather but is present year-round, appears in specific locations regardless of temperature, and doesn’t improve with ventilation alone. Both can occur together — damp walls are colder and attract more condensation.

Your Winter Action Plan

Daily: wipe windows every morning; open windows 10–15 minutes; use extractor fans while cooking and for 20 minutes after bathing.

Heating: 18–21°C during occupied times, 15–16°C minimum overnight, all rooms to at least 15°C. Turning heating completely off costs more in damage than it saves in energy.

Furniture: leave 50–100mm gap behind large furniture against external walls, especially wardrobes and beds.

Clothes drying: dry outside where possible, use a vented tumble dryer, or run a dehumidifier with a window open. Never dry on radiators without ventilation.

Longer-Term Solutions

Upgraded extractor fans (humidistat-controlled, £100–£200 installed); trickle vents in window frames; a dehumidifier for worst-affected rooms (£150–£300); or a PIV (positive input ventilation) system for whole-house problems (£800–£1,200 installed, £50–£100/year to run).
